People meditate for the spiritual, physical, and mental benefits it is said to offer. It is a simple yet complicated art. Hence, it is normal for people to have doubts regarding this ancient practice.

What is meditation?

The term meditation derives from the Latin word ‘meditari,’ which means ‘to concentrate.’ It refers to the practice of exercising the mind and body by mental concentration. It has a history of improving your calmness and helping to relax physically. Generally, you focus your mind on a specific matter and give total attention to it. 

Some interpret it as ‘to measure.’ There are varieties of definitions for meditation, depending on their type. However, these definitions do not stray far from each other. Their differences lie only in the ideology and minute details. A significant part of its meaning relies on the question of becoming. It is a form of comparing an existent subject to what it should become- usually a form of self-realization. It evaluates the reality and the ideal and the reality becoming the ideal.

How long should it take to learn meditation?

For a beginner, guided sessions are the best way to learn meditation. You will get better at it with consistent practice. You may not be able to observe any difference for a few days. But with time, you will notice the progress you are making. To learn the basics of meditation, it may take you days or weeks too. In the case of guided sessions, it will depend on the duration of sessions. However, to master, it is an entirely different question.

2. It’s not a quick fix:

Often, people consider it a skill to excel at. They try very hard to attain something that is out of the ordinary. Some meditate in hopes that mastering it will place them on higher ground with complete peace and awareness. Sooner or later, they will realize that it’s all wishful thinking. You cannot expect it to work like magic that will quickly cure all your mental and health problems.

3. It is a lifelong commitment:

To master meditation is a term weighing entirely on an individual’s opinion or your expectations. Many studies show that it is not something you can or must master. It is a form of practice that you can continue doing throughout your life and never conquer. Meditation is like gaining knowledge: you cannot get all the information about this world, but you can keep learning. The more you practice, the better you become at it. However, there is no way of mastering it because it is not about achieving anything.
With the right mindset, you will get an understanding of its purposes. One purpose is to help you live in the moment by not stressing yourself but instead remaining calm.

Types of meditation:

Millions of people practice different meditation techniques. There are more types of meditation than we may ever know. However, we will discuss three of the most widespread methods of meditation.

1. Mindfulness Meditation:

It is a technique that originates from the teachings of the Buddhists. It is one of the most widely accepted and practiced meditation methods in the U.S. In this, you have to pay close attention to the thoughts in your mind as they pass through. Try not to be skeptical about your views or try to contemplate any of them. All you have to do is notice and try to look for any patterns. 

This method is a blend of concentration and awareness. Focus on your breath as you try to be mindful of your thoughts, physical sensations, and emotions. You may also try to focus on an object in place of your breathe. You can follow this meditation technique if you do not have teachers or the necessary resources to guide you. 

Pros: By practicing mindfulness meditation, you will soon understand the patterns of your thought processes. You will be more aware of your surroundings and maintain an inner balance. Your tendency to judge situations or even people will subside in due time.

2. Spiritual meditation:

Spiritual meditation is a practice carried by religious groups to connect with and calm your soul. Eastern religions like Hinduism and Daoism are famous for performing this meditation. It is very close to prayer, but here you reflect upon the actions of your past. You handle your thoughts calmly by seeking silence and a deeper connection with your God or the surroundings. 

The practitioners often use essential oils to enhance the spiritual experience. Some of the popular choices are:

  • Myrrh
  • Cedar
  • Palo santo
  • Frankincense

Pros: You can practice this at home or in the place you go to worship. The experience can be spiritually profound and mentally beneficial for someone seeking spiritual strength and growth.

3. Focused meditation:

This method uses the five senses by influencing the practitioner to concentrate on any one of them. Here, you can try to focus your mind on an internal sensation like breathing. You can also make use of external influences like:
  • Listening to a soothing or focused sound, say, a gong.
  • Focusing on the touch of meditating beads.
  • Staring intensely at something, say, a candle flame.

In theory, these practices may sound a lot easier to follow. But it takes a lot of effort to hold your focus on something for an extended period. Most beginners may find it challenging to meditate this way, even for a few minutes. One of the critical routines is to immediately refocus on the particular object if your mind tends to wander off. 

Pros: Focused meditation trains your mind to focus on the things that are important to you. You will be able to concentrate on your work better and be less susceptible to the mind’s distractions.

Beginner’s guide to basic meditation:

With the addition of ideology and teachings into practice, meditation becomes a very complicated process. However, some may combine the similarities of those methods and devise a simple procedure for beginners to follow. We will list the steps you can follow to conduct basic meditation.

1. Find a quiet place to sit:

Ensure that there is no disturbance from the surrounding. Any distraction can reverse the intent.

2. Sit comfortably:

Ensure that your sitting position does not lead to any backaches or muscle pains later. Sit in a way that you feel relaxed. Use a pillow or blanket to prevent any discomfort.

3. Breathe normally:

Initially, take a deep breath or two to remove tensions. Then you can proceed with your meditation with normal breaths. Do not stress your breathing as it could distract you.

4. Focus:

After you find your object to focus on, be it your breath or something abstract, try to stick to it. Even if your mind wanders off, get back to your point of focus.

5. Be gentle on the distractions:

As a part of the practice, distractions are a necessary evil. If your emotions become imbalanced due to distractions, accept your distractions, and calm yourself. They will help to strengthen your focusing ability.

So, how long should it take to learn meditation for a beginner?  It all depends on how well you focus. It is safest for a beginner to take small steps at first. Try to maintain the duration of this routine for three or four minutes. Gradually, with more practice, you will be able to meditate for more extended periods.

What are some benefits of meditation?

The human body requires water daily to perform its functions. Similarly, daily meditation will provide both our mind and body with several unique benefits. The benefits may pop up when you least expect them. You can be unaware of how it’s changing you, but your close ones may notice it. Below are some of its benefits:

1. Long-term benefits:

These types of changes may take time, but in due time you will reap the benefits.
  • It improves your communication and relationship with close ones.
  • It enhances your sense of understanding and intellectual ability.
  • High motivation to do the things you love.

2. Physical benefits:

It may not much like it, but meditation helps your physical body in many ways. There are some other physical benefits that you may enjoy after practicing for years.
  • Your sense of wellbeing will improve.
  • You may experience an increase in endurance and energy.
  • It improves your quality of sleep.
  • It reduces tension and stress levels.
  • Your body will start to feel more relaxed. 
  • Improvement of blood circulation.
  • It enhances recovering and healing ability.

3. Emotional benefits:

As individuals, the reactions of our emotions can vary when we meditate. However, some of the benefits that most can attain are:
  • We become more positive about things.
  • Our responses become calmer to situations.
  • Able to maintain an emotional balance.
  • We may become more patient and peaceful.
  • Improvement of self-awareness and confidence.

As they say, all good things take time. Meditation is one such practice where you need to put in a lot of effort to reap the benefits. In the early stages, it can get frustrating. But with time, you will get used to it. Initially, you can put 10-20 minutes of your day and try meditating for about a month. Then you can analyze if you observe any improvements in your lifestyle. After which, you may decide to stop or continue. However, to witness some of its long-term benefits, it can take years of your effort.
