When you focus on your feelings, you can become conscious of your physical atmosphere. Stay in the present with a sense of awareness without contemplating too much on the past or the future. Such behavior will positively contribute to your emotional well being.

What does being emotionally well means?

To be emotionally healthy does not mean that you are always happy. It shows that you are mindful of your emotions and have control over them. You can handle situations whether they are optimistic or off-putting. It is a part of defining the question, ‘what is emotional wellness?’ Studies show that emotional wellness is a skill.

It is usual for an emotionally healthy person to still sense sadness, anxiety, stress, and anger. But they’re able to deal with such downbeat feelings. They can make decisions according to the intensity of the emotions. They’re able to make out when it is too much for them to handle. To be emotionally well is to take things slow and believe in positivity.

How does emotional wellness affect health?

When you are emotionally healthy, your mental and physical health will also keep improving daily. You may develop a healthy immune system and keep yourself physically fit. Just as positive emotions can bring about significant changes in our lives, negative emotions also create an opposite reaction.

When put through negative feelings, it can lead to chronic stress. The stress creates an imbalance of the body’s hormones by reducing the brain chemicals that make a person happy. Consequently, the immune system becomes weaker and more susceptible to sickness. Chronic stress is also known to reduce the lifespan of a person. 

Anxieties and unmanaged anger issues can also lead to high blood pressure and strokes. Your body reacts according to the way you think, behave, and feel. During stressful events, some people develop stomach ulcers too. Under depression, you may not take care of your health as you should. Some of the frequent impacts of negative emotions are:

  • Headaches 
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Insomnia 
  • Loss in appetite
  • Weight loss 
  • Back pain
  • Sexual problems
  • Hypertension
  • Obesity

However, on the bright side, there are ways to deal with your negative emotions. These steps may take time, but the results are assuring and worth the try.

What are the steps I can take to improve my emotional wellness?

It is more of a practice than an achievement. You might already be doing a few things to help yourself get a grip on your emotional wellness. It helps you to get around your daily stresses with ease. It can also allow you to realize your true potential and work productively. You will be able to thrive in team works and contribute to society.

Scanning through these points, know that emotional wellness doesn’t always mean you have to be in a good mood. It is about preparing yourself to face the music that life offers.

1. Taking good care of your physique:

Often you may find yourself burdened with many cares. People tend to have stressful moods and weak emotional well being due to poor physical health. Hence, you can release your stresses and improve your emotional health by taking good care of your health. 

You can exercise for about 30 min to one hour daily and eat nutritious food. By maintaining these two practices, you will find satisfaction in living too. In case your schedule is tight, you can take little walks of about 15-20 min per day. Be careful not to indulge yourself in drugs or alcohol.

2. Building social connections:

Man is, by nature, a social animal. We cannot live alone. You need to communicate with loved ones, neighbors, and even strangers. A healthy connection can have profound impacts on your emotional wellness. It makes you realize that you are not alone and will make you feel alive. Say hello to a friend, meet in groups, and create beautiful memories with those you meet.

3. Adequate sleep:

You may have already experienced how your days go about when you don’t take an ample amount of sleep. It is stressful and tiring. It’s hard to have control over your shattered mood. Hence, it is necessary to get proper sleep every day.

A study in 2018 observed that being sleep deprived causes a person to have repetitive negative thoughts. Such negative emotions can worsen your relationships, working environment, and lifestyle. A minimum of 6 hrs is required, and a maximum of 8 hrs is sufficient for an average adult. Also, it is essential to maintain consistent timing for your sleep routine.

4. Practice emotional management:

It is easy for your emotions to go out of control. Hence, it would be beneficial for you to know how to handle and cope with your feelings. To avoid such outburst of emotions, you can train to calm yourself by:

  • Meditating regularly.
  • Writing journals.
  • Listening to good music.
  • Discussing with a therapist.

5. Express your emotions:

Holding on to negative emotions without expressing them can negatively impact your thinking and emotional health. It is best if you tell or let the other person know about your thoughts and feelings. If kept inside for long, it can affect your relationships with the ones close to you.

6. Find purpose and be mindful:

Ponder on the things that matter to you and focus on them. Try to reduce reacting to emotions and increase pouring your energy into the things you love to do. It can be working out, your work, spending time with family, etc. You can try to focus on one thing at a time and not overexert yourself. Be consistent with your mindfulness practice.

7. Keep a balance:

Maintain a healthy balance between your work and recreational activities. Don’t let one take more of your time than the other. It would help if you had a balance to keep your mind fresh and productive at the same time. That will result in promoting a sense of satisfaction inside you.

8. Introspection:

One right way to start dealing with negative emotions is to examine its cause. Reflect upon the patterns and what they can lead to. That will give you a head start and allow you to be aware of what must follow. Hence, you can come up with solutions to prevent such causes. This introspection can help you to have control over your emotions and be emotionally intelligent.

Tips to improve emotional wellbeing:

1. Be patient:

Every good thing takes time, and hence, you can not realize emotional wellness overnight. You will need to develop it daily. Also, continue trying to understand your experiences throughout your entire life. During which, with each occasion, you will be more aware of regulating your emotions. As such, you can achieve enhancement of your emotional health.

2. Try not to be ignorant:

Continual habits and reaction patterns are not easy to get rid of in real-time. Whenever something triggers you to create an inappropriate response, learn from the experience. Try to learn from your mistakes. Think about how to handle similar situations in the future more creatively, and positively.

3. Be kind:

As the saying goes, ‘kindness is the universal language,’ it never goes unnoticed. Everybody around you experiences emotions like you. They have their worries and burdens too. Hence, it would go a long way if you could interact with others compassionately. This act will benefit both their emotional health and yours also.

4. Learn to forgive:

Often in life, you cannot move forward unless you forgive yourself or someone who did you harm. Hence, to free yourself from such chains, you need to learn to forgive. It will open your eyes to the possibilities of change and improvements. Only then will you be able to focus your emotions on the positive things in life.

5. Stay positive:

Whatever situation you may face in life, be optimistic about it. An adverse reaction will only create further inconvenience. Try to surround yourself with positive people and spend more time with them.
